Backyard Vacations - Maple Ridge Trail
55One of my most enjoyable, memorable and best vacations, was one I didn’t have to leave home to take. I called it – actually them, as there was more than one – my weekend vacations. I mentioned in a previous hub, Backyard Nature Walks that I am most fortunate to have many Provincial parks very close to my doorstep. I live in the heart of the largest rain forest in the northern hemisphere, namely the Great Bear Rain forest that stretches along the coast of British Columbia, Canada.
Not many people know there is such a thing – almost everyone is familiar with tropical rain forests, but don’t realize there are northern, temperate rain forests as well. They are home to many diverse species – like the “Spirit Bear” of Northern British Columbia and Haida Gwaii, that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. Once, these forests stretched all along the coastal waters from California to Alaska.
Flora & fauna
The local flora and fauna of this immense rain forest never fail to delight. Every trip, we meet vacationers and locals enjoying the many trails and parks we call home.
Popular creek rafting spot
One of our favorite haunts for weekend vacations is this river tributary that runs through a local equestrian center. This spot is also quite popular for spending the day rafting or tubing.
For just pennies a day...
Just think - thousands of people pay thousands of dollars to escape the drudgery of bill payments, mortgages, grocery store lineups and rush hour traffic. Very few people stop to think that a short twenty minute drive can transport them to a lush, tropical feeling, serene get-a-way, where they can park the lawn chairs in the middle of a cool clear stream and wash all their cares away.
Way, down upon the Swanee River...
This picture really does give me the feeling of slow lazy summers south of the border! (That could be due to the rather large, barge-like dog paddling downstream...) The lush greenery surrounding us just begs to be explored...inviting cool, clear water...what's not to love?
Jet-Sets-R-Us
It has always been wonderful dreaming about Jet-setting around the world, sipping the finest beverages, wonderful cuisine and exotic scenery. I have been fortunate to see, what to me, are exciting and tropical vacation spots just south of my border. (I live a short drive from Washington State and spent many hours traveling its highways...unfortunately, I don't have pictures - but that is for another article.)
For those of us who enjoy a bit of nature, campfires, and no, no one like mosquitoes - weekend, mini-vacations are hard to beat. With the economy not know what it's really doing, it can actually pay you to stay home!
No matter where you go, you will be paying for high fuel costs, so why not enjoy your own backyard for a change, and give your local economy a boost at the same time.
I just finished another wonderful weekend jaunt, and I'll be posting the pictures with my little blurb soon, so stay tuned...

- Mysteries of the Unexplained and HubNugget Hopefuls
As it was my turn to write the HubNugget roundup hub, I decided to get an early start and headed to the clubhouse to help with the reading and selecting. Maddie and Simone were already there, diligently sorting through categories. Stacks of paper... - 2 months ago
- Telus vs. Shaw - a Personal Story
With the economy and wages the way they are today, it doesn't stand to reason to spend money irresponsibly on something that you can find elsewhere for a better price. With this in mind, we decided it might be time to switch our television, internet... - 3 months ago

This is so true and what really cool pictures! Thank You! Just purfect!
Oh this so makes me long for the coast! We have snow here now, and I fear our Autumn is at an end. Thanks so much for sharing this loveliness with us, you lucky person.
Loved this hub and the pics ... you are so very lucky, Enelle, to be living where you are! Thank you for sharing. I am going to be looking forward to the next one you have promised! :)
I really enjoyed this, Enelle. It makes me miss New Paltz very much and would very much like to move back there as it's my adopted home town. You are indeed very fortunate to have such lush, beautiful natural scenery. Good for you for taking full advantage of your surroundings! I look forward to more pics.
This is similar to a photography class assignment I had. We were only allowed to go so far from our home to get a image. this makes you stop and see the world you live in everyday just a little bit differently.
I love your nature walks hubs. I wish I have a similar place near my home. I guess I just have to be content with my small garden.
I do get to explore like you when I go home to our province. There I can get to walk around and commune with nature. You have just inspired me to also write about my last provincial home visit. I actually did a photo walk then. Thanks for the inspiration Enelle!
Great idea Enelle, especially during these lean times. I hope to do a local holiday around Australia this Christmas since there are so many places which I have not seen. Thanks for sharing.
A++ We take mini vacations in our "backyard" too. We are big fans of the area we live in (Northern California)by Mt. Shasta, and love to support the local economy. Nice hub.
Travel whether near or far is always fun. With lean economic times it makes sense to do more exploring of one's local sites. And you happen to have a GORGEOUS home base! Enjoyed this hub and the great photos.
Enelle - how perfectly scenic and lovely! (Is that dog having a wonderful time yours?) You are fortunate indeed having such beauty at your doorstep - thanks for giving us a peek with those pics :)
btw, I will send you those pictures of Indian jewellery stores just as soon as it stops raining!
